Heavy rains and snowfall in Syria

Online desk Heavy rains, snow and strong winds have forced 20,000 tent-dwellers to leave their tent camps in the Syrian provinces of Idlib and Aleppo.

The charity Care says at least six tent settlements in Idlib and Aleppo provinces have been turned into lakes. According to the agency, some people have taken refuge in buildings in public areas. But many people are living under the open sky in low temperatures. At least one child has been reported dead due to severe weather.

At least 600,000 people are homeless in Syria. Eighty percent of the 1.5 million tent population in the region are women and children. At least 12 million people have fled their homes to save their lives in the last ten years since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began. At least 6 lakh people are homeless in the country. 57 lakh people have been able to take shelter abroad.

Shereen Ibrahim of CARE in Turkey said her organization was trying to provide emergency assistance to thousands of displaced people in Aleppo and Idlib. However, they are facing problems due to the difficulty of accessing the roads due to the floods. He also expressed concern that the situation could lead to an increase in Covid-19 infections. Last Wednesday, at least 20,000 people were infected and 369 died, medical officials said.

He added that due to inadequate shelters and growing hunger, all efforts by these displaced Syrians to protect themselves and their loved ones are going to fail.

Syrian Civil Defense personnel, known as White Helmets, continued their work despite rain on Sunday and provided assistance to 3,200 affected families in more than 225 camps. A six-year-old child was killed when a brick wall around a tent collapsed in Idlib last week, the Syrian Civil Defense said. Source: Al Jazeera
