This time the city of Kunduz fell to the Taliban

In Afghanistan, another provincial capital has fallen to Taliban fighters. The militant group has recently demanded the capture of Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province. This information was given in the online report of Al-Jazeera television on Sunday.

In just three days, three provincial capitals of Afghanistan fell to Taliban fighters in Kunduz. Of the three provincial capitals that have collapsed, Kunduz is the most significant. The city also fell to the Taliban in 2015 and 2016.The Taliban on Saturday demanded control of Sebarghan, the capital of Jawzjan province. Earlier in the day, the militant group captured Zaranj, the capital of the southwestern province of Nimroz.

The fall of three provincial capitals in three days is seen as a major blow to the country's security forces amid fierce fighting between government forces and the Taliban across Afghanistan. The Taliban issued a statement today regarding the occupation of Kunduz. The Taliban said in a statement that they had seized the city's police headquarters, the governor's compound and a jail.

Local sources and journalists have confirmed to Al Jazeera that Taliban fighters are currently stationed in the provincial capital, Kunduz. Journalists in central Kunduz say the Taliban have taken over the police chief's office and the election commissioner's office in the provincial capital. The Taliban flag has been flown in the city.

However, the Afghan government has denied that the city of Kunduz fell to the Taliban.Addressing the people of Kunduz, the Afghan commando said, "You can be sure that the Afghan forces are with you."

The Taliban have been stepping up their offensive and seizing territory since last May, as foreign troops began withdrawing from Afghanistan. They have claimed control of a large part of Afghanistan.
