The speakers were speaking at a protest rally organized by Hefazat-e-Islam at Badr Uddin Ahmed Kamran Chattar in Bandarbazar on Sunday afternoon.
District Awami League senior vice-president Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury presided over the protest rally. District Awami League General Secretary Advocate. Nasir Uddin Khan addressed the rally. District Awami League vice-president Sujat Ali Rafique, district Juba League president Shamim Ahmed VP, Swechchhasebak League president Afshar Aziz, district Tanti League president Alamgir Hossain, former district Chhatra League president Shahriar Alam Samad and others spoke.
Meanwhile, the Awami League and its affiliates took position on different roads of Sylhet since morning during the strike called by Hefazat-e-Islam.
Hefazat leaders and activists also took position on the road in the morning. In the afternoon, Chhatra Shibir tried to protest in the Court Point area of the city.
At that time they were chased by the BCL leaders and activists. Five people, including two BCL activists, were injured. Police arrested 5 people from the spot. A large number of police were deployed across the city to avoid sabotage during the strike.
Kotwali Police Station OC SM Abu Farhad of Sylhet Metropolitan Police said five people were detained during the chase. All of them are camp workers. I also heard that some people were injured. However, the exact number is not yet known.
He said Hefazat workers took a peaceful stand. However, around noon, the camp went down to the ground and tried to create chaos. The police resisted them.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police BM Ashraf Ullah Taher said the police are fully prepared to avoid any kind of sabotage in the name of strike.
