Hefazat set fire to public and private offices

During the morning-evening hartal called by Hefazat-e-Islam, the agitators carried out massive attacks, vandalism and arson on important government and non-government offices, Awami League party offices and houses.

This created anarchy in Brahmanbaria district. Meanwhile, the death toll rose to 10 after two people were killed on Sunday. The situation is tense all over the city.

Armed activists have been patrolling the city's Haldarpara district Awami League office, district council office, the chief executive's vehicle and three motorcycles since 11 a.m. , District Awami League General Secretary's Office, District Shilpakala Academy, Brahmanbaria District Public Library, Sur Samrat Ustad Alauddin Music Hall, Sadar Upazila Land Office,Ashuganj toll plaza booth, district Awami League general secretary Al Mamun Sarkar's residence and his father-in-law's house, district BCL president Rabiul Hossain Rubel, district BCL general secretary Shahadat Hossain Shovon's house were set on fire.

Thirty-two stalls of the development fair organized by the district administration were set on fire at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Language Square in the city.

Besides, Brahmanbaria Press Club, Bank of Asia, District Muktijoddha Sangsad Complex, Statue of Anandamoyi Kalibari Temple in the city, Vijayanagar Upazila Awami League President Zahirul Islam Bhuiyan's own office, Vijayanagar Upazila Parishad Chairman Nasima Mukai Ali's Haldarpara residence in the city, Department of Education Engineering, Mother and , Document Writers Association, the residence of the contractor Khairul Alam was extensively vandalized.

Press Club President Riaz Uddin Jami was seriously injured in the attack on Brahmanbaria Press Club. Meanwhile, from morning till afternoon, there were massive clashes between the protesters and law enforcers at various places including Pairatala, District Police Line, Comilla-Sylhet Highway Bishbrod area.

Protesters stormed and vandalized the Brahmanbaria police line at Pirbari in the city around 11am. Police then fired rubber bullets and tear gas for hours to control the situation.

No law enforcement officers were seen in the city during the attack. The students of the madrasa were requested not to attack the police station by miking from the police station mosque around 12:30 pm.

Regarding the arson, District Council Chairman Shafiqul Alam said, "The strikers came to my office and vandalized it and set it on fire." The chief executive also vandalized the engineer's car and set it on fire.

Meanwhile, train services on the Dhaka-Chittagong-Sylhet and Noakhali routes in Brahmanbaria have been suspended due to security concerns. The Chittagong-bound Sonarbangla Express was vandalized at Brahmanbaria around 9am. The nut-bolt of the railway line was removed. The strikers also left concrete slabs on the line. The fire broke out at Railway Bridge No. 18 between Ashuganj and Brahmanbaria.

Additional Director General of Railways (Operations) Sardar Shahadat Ali told reporters that trains on the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet routes have been closed since 9am due to security concerns.
