11 workers trapped in gold mine rescued in China

Rescuers have been able to rescue 11 workers after being trapped in a gold mine in China for 14 days.

The first worker was lifted from a shaft in the mine on Sunday morning, Reuters news agency reported, citing a report by China's state-run media CCTV.

As seen in the footage, the eyes of the rescued worker were covered with black cloth.

The rescued worker was in a critical condition, CCTV reported. Rescuers wrapped the almost helpless man in a heavy blanket and took him to the hospital in an ambulance.

Three more workers were later rescued from another part of the mine. One of them was injured. In the afternoon, seven more workers were picked up from the same section in two steps.

Some of them were seen walking with the help of rescuers. All their eyes were covered with black cloth. Everyone was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

An explosion at the Hushan mine under construction near the city of Yantai in China's eastern Shandong province on January 10 damaged the exit and communication system, leaving a total of 22 workers trapped under the mine about 800 meters below the ground.

One person was killed and rescuers were unable to locate 10 more, Xinhua news agency reported last week.

Officials in the country said Thursday that a team of 11 others had been contacted and was receiving food from rescue teams.

They said it could take another two weeks to dig a hole and reach them. Xinhua later said they would be rescued by Sunday.
