50 killed in Congo attack

At least 50 people have been killed in two attacks by gunmen in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The killings took place in two villages bordering Uganda. Members of an armed group are believed to have carried out the attack.

The BBC reports on Monday that gunmen attacked two villages, Boga and Tichabi, in Ituri province. Twelve armed groups are active in the area. Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) members may have carried out the attack. However, the killing of the wife of a local group leader has been blamed on ethnic hatred.Witnesses said gunmen stormed a shelter on a motorcycle. Victims of previous violence took refuge there.

A state of emergency has already been declared in Ituri and neighboring North Kivu province.Thousands of UN peacekeepers are stationed in the African country.

Even then, multiple attacks occur every week. The government has given additional powers to the army to control the situation.
