The ruling Trinamool Congress continues to disintegrate in the run-up to the forthcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal. Following this, Forest Minister Rajiv Banerjee resigned from the cabinet on Friday.
West Bengal is scheduled to hold assembly elections in April this year. With that election looming, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's party is splitting at the grassroots. Earlier, Transport Minister Shuvendu Adhikari and State Minister for Sports Laxmiratan Shukla resigned. Rajiv Banerjee handed over his resignation letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee this afternoon. He then went to the palace and handed over a copy of the resignation letter to Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. The governor has accepted his resignation.
Outgoing minister Rajiv Banerjee said he did not get due respect in the party. The matter was brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and the top leaders of the party but they did not get proper justice. So he was forced to resign today. He said, "During my visit to North Bengal, I was removed from the post of Irrigation Minister without informing me and I was made the Forest Minister. I heard the news on television. I could not accept this decision that day. That is why I resigned from the cabinet today. '
After Rajiv's resignation, Trinamool general secretary Perth Chatterjee said, "If two leaves fall from a banyan tree, nothing happens to the banyan tree." New leaves sprout again. So Rajiv's resignation will not harm the party. Those who love the grassroots can never leave the party. There will be grassroots under Mamata's leadership. People will also win this election by voting for Mamata.
Meanwhile, Rajiv Banerjee has not said anything about joining the BJP, but there are rumors about it. BJP state president Dilip Ghosh said Rajiv Banerjee was welcome in the BJP.
On December 19, 31 West Bengal leaders, MPs, former ministers, MLAs and municipal leaders joined the BJP in front of Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah. Among them were 10 current MLAs including Minister of State Shuvendu Adhikari, 1 current Trinamool MP and 1 former MP.
