A virtual meeting between Bangladesh and Myanmar is going to be held today under the mediation of China with the aim of expediting the repatriation of Rohingya. Foreign Secretary Masud bin Momen will lead the Bangladesh delegation to the tripartite meeting in the afternoon. Despite the trilateral talks at the foreign minister level for so long, this time Myanmar agreed to take down the Myanmar level to a secretary level meeting.
Several officials in charge of the government told Manabjamin yesterday that Dhaka has been looking forward to the desired meeting since the middle of the outgoing year. But Corona had been refusing to attend the Myanmar meeting on various pretexts, including national elections and the formation of a government. Although they agreed to hold the last meeting on January 9, they postponed it at the last minute.
Finally, although late, today Bangladesh, China and Myanmar are sitting in talks. Dhaka hopes that the presence of a ministerial-level representative of China, a friend and development partner of both Bangladesh and Myanmar, will make the forthcoming meeting fruitful.
