China calls for calm over Iran's announcement

China has called on all sides to remain calm after announcing plans to enrich Iran's uranium to 20 percent. Tensions between the United States and Iran have risen sharply since the announcement.

Reuters quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying as saying on Tuesday that Iran's nuclear program was complex and sensitive. In an interview with a newspaper in Beijing, Hua said China is urging all parties to remain calm on the issue of Iran's nuclear program. China wants to change the situation through diplomatic efforts without any behavior that could escalate tensions.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua added that pressure was needed on the United States to return to the agreement unconditionally. He also called for the lifting of all sanctions on Iran.

Iran says it will abide by the agreement if the United States lifts sanctions. Newly elected US President Joe Biden has said that if Iran adheres strictly, the United States will return to the agreement.

Iran reached this level of uranium enrichment before the international agreement in 2015, where they want to go. In 2019, US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal and imposed sanctions on Iran. Iran has also announced plans to continue its nuclear program. Last month, in response to the assassination of the country's top nuclear scientist, the country's parliament passed legislation aimed at boosting its nuclear program.

The United States reached an agreement with Iran in 2015 under former US President Barack Obama. Apart from Iran and the United States, the six-nation pact includes Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany. The main point of the agreement was that Iran would limit its nuclear activities and the IAEA would be able to inspect any of Iran's nuclear facilities at any time.In return, the United States lifted the economic embargo on Iran. But the United States pulled out of the deal last year after Trump came to power. On the other hand, Iran announced the resumption of their nuclear program.
