Amnesty calls on Israel to provide vaccines to Palestinians

The international human rights organization Amnesty International has called on Israel to provide a dose of corona vaccine to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. At the same time, the agency says, Israel is obliged to do so under international law.

The Palestinian Authority in the West Bank has not publicly asked Israel for help with the vaccine, according to India-based news outlet Owen. About 2.8 million Palestinians live in the region. Meanwhile, Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, is unlikely to coordinate with Israel on vaccination efforts. About 2 million Palestinians live in the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian Authority says Palestinians will be vaccinated in the West Bank and Gaza through UN-backed Kovacs. Israel has been vaccinating its citizens, including Israeli settlements in the West Bank, since December 19. Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967 after a six-day war.
