North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been elected general secretary of the country's ruling Workers' Party. North Korea's state media KCNA reported this information on Monday. The post of general secretary is considered the most important in the country's Workers' Party.
The decision was taken at a conference of North Korea's Workers' Party, the AFP news agency reported. Earlier, Kim Jong-un was the chairman of the party. He became the general secretary through the conference. According to KCNA, he has been unanimously elected general secretary of the party.
Before Kim Jong-un, his father Kim Jong-il was the general secretary. Il became the country's leader after his father's death in 1994. In 1996, he became the general secretary of the party. Then in 2011 Jung-il died. Later, his son Kim Jong-un became the leader of the country. But Un was originally the party chairman. Then yesterday he was announced to be the general secretary.
A number of changes have been made through the party's conference, Reuters reported. Kim Jong-un's sister Kim Yoo-jung did not get a place in the new central committee. Ahan Chan-il, a researcher at the World Institute for North Korea in Seoul, South Korea, said Kim Jong-un wanted to create his own image and usher in a new era that would be different from his father's.But he could not do that as the chairman of the party. He said Kim also acknowledged that the changes he had made in 2016 had not worked.
Meanwhile, new rumors have started that Kim Jong-un's sister has been dropped from the Politburo. The decision also raises questions about whether Kim Yoo-jung's influence in the party has increased.
